BARRY KOPLOWITZ

Fine Artist

I started painting in my teens, in Brooklyn, NY. My first 10 years painting were as a self-taught painter, doing Plein Air on the Brighton Beach/Coney Island beaches and streets, as well as studio fantasy paintings. The beach and boardwalk continue to be important subjects for me.

In my 20's, I studied under Lester Polakov, at the Studio and Forum of Stage Design, in the Greenwich Village district of Manhattan. After working with Lester, I took the skills I'd learned for painting theatrical scenery, to the Interior Design industry, doing interior Murals, Trompe L'oeil and other decorative painting.

In time, I rediscovered the fine artist within me, and moved back to Fine Art, doing both Plein Air and Studio painting, as well as teaching. However, this time, I brought the technical skills I had learned to the freedom and joy I had at the start.

While I still do a few interior murals per year, the overwhelming body of my work is done on linen or paper within my studio in Delaware, or outdoors.

My work is both Figurative and Landscape. In my Figurative work, I am focused on a moment between a small group of people, or someone alone in a space where others may join them. My Landscape work is mostly of the coastline, but not exclusively so. In both cases, my focus is of a single moment in time, with all its influences and complexities. Light and color, as well as sense of drama, are driven by structurally abstract composition, painted in a form of contemporary realism.

I've taught in NJ, PA and DE and continue to offer workshops on an ongoing basis through local art leagues.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

“For the past several years, I have been exploring ways to represent the beauty of rock jetties on coastal beaches, along with the forms and light that each season and time of day offers us. To me, my paintings of these rocks are portraits, and I approach them as individuals in a group. One of the compliments I enjoy the most is when someone recognizes a group of individual rocks in a larger jetty.

My paintings are often of the same location in different seasons, times of day, weather and from different perspectives. I continue to explore them in Oils, Charcoal, Ink, Acrylic, gouache, and Graphite. Always striving to make each piece completely individual and unique.

My figurative work attempts to show moments shared by individuals, or a private moment alone. They may be of people on a boardwalk, pub, or sitting in a park—or a jetty.

I’m driven by color, and an abstract sense of composition, painted in a contemporary approach to realism.”
