I work in cardboard. Cardboard? Yep, cardboard. But also pencil shards, ruler bits, pieces of things —anythings—and just plain junk. Here, I can play with traditional boundaries of composition, materials, and concept. It doesn't matter what it is as long as the stuff plays nice together. So you can "bust out" of the conventional limits of circle, square, or rectangle, your "art" can even act as the "frame" itself. It’s an exhilarating change of pace that, nonetheless, offers him an outlet for his love of painting and drawing as well as a natural extension for his visual fascination of odd creatures (real and unreal), rivets, screws, ductwork, and mechanical stuff.
I earned a BS in Art Ed. (from Indiana University of PA) and was certified to teach K-12. I currently teach art classes for kids and adults at Mispillion Art League in Milford (and have done classes for the Dover Art League, and all over Delaware). I earned an MA in Painting and Drawing, also from IUP. I get referred to as THE CARDBOARD GUY now and couldn't be more pleased. BTW, I am also an English Dept. writing tutor at Delaware Technology Community College in Dover. I am a member of the Dover Art League, Mispillion Art League, and Rehoboth Art League.
Past lives: I was a college professor, a freelance illustrator and writer, contributing art-anthology editor, guest lecturer, and author of eight published books on design and illustration. I helped create a national illustration conference and taught decades’ worth of kids' classes. And that was all before I packed my life (and studio) into 300 boxes and moved from small-town Ohio to tiny state Delaware. Three hundred boxes tickled my act of problem-solving and soon made its way into his art. Literally. Cardboard (and all the related flotsam and Jetsons) is a material so ubiquitous and common, it’s often maligned as inconsequential. But here I will call BS. You don't need really need fancy, expensive tools to generate meaningful art.
Isn’t it wonderful? A whole career doing ostensibly "high art" (painting and drawing) has led me to the recycling bins, of all places, to create my best work yet. My wife laughs that no box on the side of the road is safe when he is around. Well, that’s only half a joke.
I am honored and proud to say that I have been awarded a 2026 Individual Artist's Fellowship in the Works on Paper discipline, Established Artist Category. I am also a 2020 Fellow (same discipline, Emerging Artist Category.

I teach an ongoing Seniors workshop at MAL. I believe it is for the Creative Aging program? If so, I am in the system already.
