Tracey Nadal was born in South Africa and immigrated to Maryland in 1978 with her family. She began her formal artist journey while at Notre Dame of Maryland University where she graduated in 1991. She has worked and lived in Delaware since 1993 and has painted in the area since then.

Tracey’s artistic journey has evolved over the years and has found that nature never ceased to inspire her and is always looking for natural beauty that can translate into a drawing, oil or watercolor painting. One of her main sources of inspiration from nature is trees. There is something powerful in a tree that has stood the test of time. From early on in her training she has been drawn to landscapes and structures with history such as old barns or farmhouses. Her mentor always encouraged her to work from life and paint en plein air. Tracey has found this method of painting to be challenging in the field yet rewarding when she is able to capture the shadows as they slowly creep across her subject.

Tracey’s philosophy on painting and life is that everyone has their own journey that only they can take. She aspires to be like the great painters but wants to find her own direction and find beauty in her own uniqueness in what and how she chooses to paint.

When Tracey began painting, she was introduced to the impressionist painters. She found this method of painting to be free and enlightening. As she has evolved into her own style over the years, she can see that her own life experiences, whether at a museum or engaging with another artist, have shaped her ongoing journey.

Some of her favorite painters are from the impressionist period such as Van Gogh, Monet, Manet, Mary Cassat, and others. She has also found inspiration in the works of the Wyeth family, in particular, Andrew Wyeth, Howard Pyle and her mentor, Richard Layton.

Tracey’s current direction is to develop her interest in the art of painting on location. She wants to continue exploring Delaware and the surrounding areas in hopes of new discoveries and inspirations to carry on her artistic endeavors. In addition, she is interested in exhibiting her work and teaching workshops or classes.
