Lewes Public Arts Committee is hosting a Winter Solstice Lantern Festival on December 19-21st, 2026. Come make a lantern, celebrate the solstice, and join the parade!
Lantern-making workshops will be held Saturday, December 19th, 10 a.m.-12 p.m. and 1-3 p.m., and Sunday, December 20th, 10 a.m.-12 p.m. and 1-3 p.m. We hope everyone, children and adults, will join us by making a lantern in one of the workshops and parading their handmade creation through town. The workshop investment is $10 per person and includes all the materials and instruction necessary to create your own personal lantern. Scholarships are available, and we encourage people to reach out to Giulia at gkirsch@ci.lewes.de.us with questions about the workshop or the scholarship availability.
On Monday, December 21st, to celebrate the return of the light, we ask that participants bring their lantern, made in the workshop or brought from home, and join in a FREE parade that starts and ends at Canal Front Park. The parade will travel through historic downtown Lewes and allow all involved to soak in the holiday charm.
Lewes Public Arts and the City of Lewes support bringing the community together around the arts. The committee organizes annual art-focused events for the public, including bus trips to sculpture gardens and museums as part of their education mission, artist talks, and various workshops for the community. Another part of their mission is to bring art to Lewes. The organization brings temporary and permanent art to Lewes in a thoughtful, curated way that sparks communication and conversation among townspeople and tourists alike. Their goal is to help make Lewes a destination for art.
