HEADS UP! Cartoons and Creativity is a class for the thinking ARToonist. Students will be presented with a variety of drawing and design prompts that will drive young artists to explore materials, inspire creative (and individual) thinking, and teach technique—all with a decided emphasis on fun. Yes, these are planned art activities, but you never know where these free-form prompts might take the artist with an open mind. It’s gonna be goofy and inspired, wild and clever, smart and sassy. It’s too cool for school—and all virtual! *Children ages 5-7 must have an adult present at the computer during class.

Students are challenged to unleash their unique point of view with various materials and methods…conventional and unconventional. Each project will start with their plan and we’ll figure out how to make their idea work. If we can’t, they’ll learn what it takes to make Plan B. All the while, we’ll be stretching their creativity to help develop better problem-solving skills, confidence, and perseverance in their artistic talents!

Cutting and manipulating plus drawing and painting on cardboard may be a marked (pun intended) change of pace for you, but you’ll find that your cardboard technique can be a natural extension of your love of creating and concept-making. Cardboard is everywhere and so common, it’s usually considered inconsequential—a bad, corrugated wrap. But think of it as creative recycling and dramatic up-cycling and you’ll see that that you don’t need fancy tools or expensive papers to generate meaningful art. We’re going to manipulate this humble surface with ordinary tools—markers, scissors, and glue sticks—to do just that. This class is designed to open up new doors of creativity for students; you’ll be positively tickled to work in a material that is wonderfully simple and presents a simply wonderful challenge.
