Coastal Concerts presents the Cann Duo (piano)
Cann Duo
Sisters Kimberly & Michelle Cann, “darlings of duo pianists,” are consummate musicians passionate about performing a wide range of multicultural repertoire throughout the US and committed to fostering increased appreciation for the arts in their local communities.
Kimberly and Michelle began performing professionally as The Cann Duo in 2010 and since then, they have toured extensively throughout the US. Their electrifying performances and engaging outreach programs are all the more meaningful due to the unmistakable sound of their lifelong hereditary connection.
Kimberly Cann
West Indian-American Kimberly Cann has been immersed in the world of music performance, outreach, & education since childhood. Following her debut at 13 as an orchestral soloist, she continued her studies (Van Cliburn Institute; MM, Eastman School of Music) and has since served as a guest artist, speaker, clinician, & visiting professor both in the US and abroad.
Together with her spouse, Aaron Brown, she oversees an award-winning set of teaching studios, Piano Lab & Music Lab. This season, they will open The Asheville Conservatory of the Arts poised to serve over seven hundred students.
Kimberly has served on the boards of the Asheville Symphony, Asheville Area Piano Forum, and others. In 2011, she founded "Keys for Kidz," partnering with local nonprofits to provide group piano classes for underserved children in the community. While overseeing the management of her studios, she also maintains a busy schedule of outreach & performance. Kimberly recently performed and led panel discussions at the National Conference of Music Teachers in Reno, Nevada, which centered around "Creating the Next Generation of Concert Pianists."
Michelle Cann
Lauded as “exquisite” by The Philadelphia Inquirer and “a pianist of sterling artistry” by Gramophone, Michelle Cann has become one of the most sought-after pianists of her generation. She made her debut in 2021 with The Philadelphia Orchestra and has recently performed concertos with The Cleveland Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra, the Orquestra Sinfônica Municipal de São Paulo, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the symphony orchestras of Atlanta, Baltimore, and Cincinnati. Highlights of Cann’s 2023-24 season included appearances with the Charlotte, Hawaii, Indianapolis, Québec, Sarasota, and Winnipeg symphony orchestras, and recitals in New York City, Portland, Berkeley, Beverly Hills, and Denver.
Recognized as a leading interpreter of the piano music of Florence Price, Cann performed the New York City premiere of Price’s Piano Concerto in One Movement with The Dream Unfinished Orchestra in July 2016. Her recording of the concerto with the New York Youth Symphony won a Grammy Award in 2023. Her acclaimed debut solo album Revival, featuring music by Price and Margaret Bonds, was released in May 2023.
Cann was the recipient of the 2022 Sphinx Medal of Excellence, the highest honor bestowed by the Sphinx Organization. She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in piano performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music and an Artist’s Diploma from the Curtis Institute of Music. Cann joined the Curtis piano faculty in 2020 as the inaugural Eleanor Sokoloff Chair in Piano Studies, and she joined the piano faculty of the Manhattan School of Music in 2023.
