Coffee House concert
On Saturday, November 16, Delaware Friends of Folk will present their monthly coffee house concert in the Dover Art League, 21 W. Loockerman St. in Dover, beginning at 7:30 pm. Admission is $7 for members of Delaware Friends of Folk, $10 for non-members, teens are half-price, and those 12 and under are admitted free. Fresh-brewed coffee, baked cookies, and other snacks will be available. Doors open at 7:00 pm and seating may be limited.
The featured act for the evening is Delaware native Nate McCormick. Nate is the guitarist and singer for the up-and-coming Eastern Shore trio, Native Tongue. As a solo artist, Nate incorporates various instrumentation and effects into his shows, basing performances on a phrase sampler/looper. With an eclectic array of influences and a broad range of experience, his shows combine progressive levels of energy and feeling. Nate makes music through a choreography of sorts, layer by layer. Each performance becomes unique and special, as they’re all constructed right before your eyes and ears. Although he's not the only one out there using this type of approach to making live music, he's got a performance style that's decidedly original and unique.
Nate’s was an interesting musical journey and upbringing. He was born in northern Delaware, raised in all three counties, lived briefly in PA, spent almost a decade around Baltimore, and finally returned to the eastern shore beaches to be closer to family and regroup musically. Nate continues the journey onward to play and write original music. Either in a loop-based format, or with the band, he plays throughout the area regularly and adding new venues or festivals to the roster all the time.
Opening the evening will be Camden resident Keith Brodin. Keith hails from Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the north-east of England. After seeing Rory Gallagher at the age of 14, he nagged his poor mother for his first guitar. After moving to Manchester at 18 he developed a love of folk music, especially Irish folk and protest songs. Keith emigrated in the mid-nineties and started busking on the boardwalk in Ocean City. He played in various bands over the years, including Stolen Child, a duo with his close friend Jessica. They were finalists in early Delmarva Folk Hero contests; sadly, Jess passed in 2023. These days Keith can often be found with his friend Jim Rezac blasting out punk-folk favorites. Keith’s Spotify list bounces from Motorhead to Mumford and Sons, Iggy Pop to The Pogues, Sex Pistols to Leornard Cohen. This dichotomy is reflected in his solo performances, along with the occasional original.
Some Delaware Friends of Folk events are supported in part by grants from the Delaware Division of the Arts, a state agency, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts. The Division promotes Delaware arts events on www.DelawareScene.com.
