The 2x4s Square Dance Club, founded in 1963, meets most Friday nights throughout the year in Newark, DE. At our dances, spectators are welcome, but we encourage you to take lessons so you can join in the fun.Â
We usually offer two free classes a year (September and January). You can come get a taste of Modern Western Square Dancing. Our caller will teach a few basic calls to get you dancing quickly. Try it! It’s incredibly fun! We welcome solos, couples, families, and groups of all ages. Two 16-week class sessions are held each year for Beginners (one in the fall and another in the spring semester). Call for more information.
You may remember square dancing from your school days or from old-time movies. If so, you will hardly recognize square dancing today! Square dancing has a long heritage, coming to America with the earliest settlers but has evolved over the years and grown in popularity. It is done exactly the same worldwide, and you can take part in the fun. No dance experience is necessary to learn how to square dance. It is for the active in heart and mind"”a great physical exercise and a mental challenge.Â
Eight people form a square and the “caller" is there to tell us the steps. Friendships are formed with people of all walks of life and all ages. Best of all, it is great fun, even while learning! The music appeals to many - not only is dancing done to country tunes but also to rock, pop, folk, and show tunes.
During the year, the members of the 2x4s enjoy doing demonstrations including audience participation. We also go to festivals, conventions, and other square dance clubs in the area. We hope you will try square dancing, too.
