Now in its 38th year, the First State Symphonic Band was established in 1951 by employees of the DuPont Corporation (as the DuPont Company Employee Band). In 1978, its charter changed, and it became a community band welcoming all levels of performers, from all types of backgrounds. It currently consists of about 50 members. The First State Symphonic Band plays a very active summer concert series throughout the State of Delaware. The band plays a collection of light classics, marches, show tunes, jazz compilations, and popular melodies from enduring singers. Mr. Jonathan Wittman serves as both musical director and conductor for the band. Each year, we try to program 2 or 3 new compositions for concert band. Previous concert locations include Bellevue State Park, Battery Park (New Castle), Battery Park (Delaware City), Rehoboth Beach, Bethany Beach, Downs Cultural Center-Ingleside, Longwood Gardens, Winterthur, Newark Senior Center, NCC Farmer's Markets, and a variety of eldercare/retirement homes.
