Newark and Energy

Artist Name: Leo Laskaris

Year: 1955

Artwork Type: 2-D

Artwork Material: Mural

Description: One of a series of three "The Little World" murals by Leo Laskaris. The third panel depicts welders from the tank plant (which later became Chrysler), police officers, doctors and farming. This mural symbolizes the relationship between Newark and energy by showing workers in several professions and how these workers utilize energy and interact with the world around them. "We are presented with the two alternatives for the use of energy - its release for the destruction, or for the aid, of mankind," former UD art professor Frank H. Sommer wrote. The mural hangs in the Newark City Council Chambers alongside the other two murals in the series.
