Artist Biography
Phyllis Muyskens has lived all over the U.S., accompanying her husband Don to his many postings with railroads across the country. When they were in one spot long enough, she worked as an accountant for a wide variety of businesses as well as serving others through her churches.
She didn't begin actively making art until settling in North East, MD with Don after retirement. Taking art classes at Cecil College, she discovered that her Christian faith and her artistic impulses worked together beautifully: for her, the process of creating is a contemplative one, and every piece became an opportunity for prayer and devotion. She began with watercolor and when that became too difficult to manage moved on to chair caning, making a point to weave prayers for the folks receiving the chairs into her creations. Prayer and connection with God have been important elements of her art since then and complement so well the service and commitment she shares with our community, including various ministries at Newark UMC and beyond.
After Don's passing in 2020, Phyllis found a YouTube video about Liquid Acrylic Pouring (Fluid Art) and decided to give it a go, with great success. She became joyfully prolific in creating marvelous pieces that dance with color and movement, and we are grateful that she is providing this show and sale of these paintings on behalf of Newark UMC and its ministries.
