The Era of McCarthyism

The Milford Museum American History Series continues with a program titled The Era of McCarthyism presented by Emily Green on Saturday, October 11, 1:00 p.m. at the Milford Public Library in Milford, Delaware. While history may not repeat itself, it often rhymes. This common refrain holds true for both the First and Second Red Scares. Though Joseph McCarthy’s era is better known, parallels run deep to the era led by A. Mitchell Palmer. This program will examine the time of the First Red Scare following World War One before moving on to the McCarthy era which saw one of the darkest eras of American history reveal itself as Senator Joseph McCarthy and his associates mercilessly hunted for communists in all areas of American government, culture, and society. Along the way, some surprising Delaware connections will be revealed.

Emily Green is a Delaware native, graduating from Dover High School in 2008. She earned her undergraduate degree in history from West Chester University of Pennsylvania and her graduate degree in American history from Pace University. Her graduate thesis focused on the role played by women in opposing the second wave of feminism and the resurgence of conservatism in post-WWII America. She began her teaching career at Caesar Rodney High School where she taught AP United States History and AP Human Geography. She now teaches at Polytech High School where she was named the 2025 Polytech School District Teacher of the Year.
