Through the Eyes of a Photojournalist

Over the course of two decades as a staff photographer for major publications—bookended by two of the most heartbreaking events in recent U.S. history, the Columbine High School shooting and the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre—two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Essdras M. Suarez has borne witness to the extremes of the human experience.

From the war in Iraq to the chaos and mayhem of political unrest in places like Haiti, from the devastation of the Indonesian tsunami to the quiet, unshakable resolve found in everyday life, Suarez has been there—camera in hand—telling the stories of those living through these moments.

This talk is a visual and emotional journey that speaks to the enduring strength of the human spirit. It explores how, even in the darkest of times, people find ways to carry on. Through it all, Suarez offers a deeply human perspective shaped by years on the front lines: that hope, compassion, and resilience continue to outshine despair.
