The Well-Read Book Club discusses The Hobbit (Tolkein)
Join "The Well Read Book Club" to read and discuss a broad spectrum of literature including contemporary and classic novels, plays, poetry and short story anthologies. This month's selected title is J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy adventure, The Hobbit, or There and Back Again.
The Hobbit is a charming, accessible adventure, important as a classic of fantasy literature, and the compelling character development of Bilbo Baggins. It's an excellent introduction to J.R.R. Tolkien's world of Middle-earth. The Hobbit is an approachable and less complex entry into Tolkien's work than The Lord of the Rings. Its world-building is vivid but easy to follow, and the plot has a clear, direct structure. The Hobbit established Tolkien as a master of modern fantasy; reading it is essential for understanding the genre.
KCPL will have limited copies of the book available for check out (while they last). You can also request copies via the Delaware Libraries online catalog at www.lib.de.us with your library card and 4-digit PIN. Large print, e-book, digital audiobook, or CD audiobook versions may also be available.
