Twilight Inspired by Lesley McCaskill
Twilight is the time period between day and night when the sky is partially illuminated by the Sun, occurring before sunrise and after sunset. It consists of three stages: civil twilight, nautical twilight, and astronomical twilight, defined by how far the Sun is below the horizon. In art however, twilight often symbolizes a transitional state between light and darkness, evoking feelings of mystery, introspection, and emotional depth. It is frequently depicted in paintings to create a contemplative mood, capturing the beauty of the fading light and the softening of forms. This month the artists of Gallery One are exploring this magical time of day. Writers have long recognized twilight as metaphor. A fragile moment of reconciliation, where sea and sky become inseparable. Artist Eileen Olson knows this feeling. In her acrylic painting, “Threshold,” Olson depicts a solitary figure draped in red standing at the threshold between day and night, light and darkness, twilight. “Everyone knows what it feels like to be at a threshold, that pause felt before stepping into something new.’ Artist Dale Sheldon’s acrylic painting, “Evening Serenity,” evokes the entirety of the twilight experience, “As the sun sets, a new landscape appears. Soft colors and reflections with new sounds and sights, crickets and frogs and lightning bugs create a peaceful hum reflecting the transition to night.”
For many artists being by the sea at twilight is an ethereal experience. In “Quiet Time,” an acrylic painting by Joyce Condry, and in Cheryl Wisbrock’s, watercolor, “Inspired by Twilight,” the sand and sea meeting the sky take center stage. While for artist Mary Bode Byrd time spent near the ocean during heavy storms at twilight, influenced her acrylic painting, “Wall Energy.”
For artist Laura Hickman the fall time change transformed her art studio, “I began to see the interior lights illuminating my studio, bringing the beautiful twilight colors reflecting the magic time between light and dark. In artist Ed Lewandowski’s oil painting, “Winter Barn,” a snow-covered barn glows with golden warmth beneath a twilight sky, where fading hues of rose and indigo whisper the day’s last light.
Cindy Beyer’s watercolor painting, " Blue Hour Beacon," twinkles in the twilight while lighting the way for the weary sea captains returning home, and artist
Lesley McCaskill’s acrylic, “Eagles’ Watch,” pays homage to the majestic eagle guarding the twilight sky over the glade near her home.
“Twilight is not an end, but a beginning disguised as an end.” We hope you’ll stop by this month and check out our twilight glow! Gallery One is open daily from 10am – 4pm.
