Metal & Memory: An Artist Dialogue With History

Heidi Lowe invites you to see her new exhibition, “Metal & Memory: An Artist Dialogue With History,” at the opening reception on Saturday, November 1st, from 5-6 pm at the Rehoboth Beach Museum.

As a Rehoboth native, Heidi Lowe spent her childhood exploring every nook and cranny of this area. After spending her days at Rehoboth Elementary, she would walk to her mother, Colleen Lowe’s, kids' clothing store on Main. Her days were filled with making collages of visiting tourists, creating earrings to sell at boutiques down the street, and running lunches to other shop owners. Rehoboth holds a very special place in Heidi’s life, and she was incredibly honored to be asked to create this exhibition. The Rehoboth Beach Museum selected five pieces from its permanent collection that Heidi Lowe was tasked with responding to. Some pieces came from a time well before her own; others she knew intimately. All have left a lasting mark still felt today. Each piece in this body of work is connected to Heidi and the feeling of what could have been, from the times of Native Americans fishing for eels to the revival and the fun of the boardwalk.

Heidi is an artist. The Lowe family prioritized artistic expression, working with mediums like paint, crayons, clay, and construction daily. She was introduced to silversmithing at Cape High School; from there, a lifelong passion was born. She has since received her BFA in Metals and Jewelry from Maine College of Art in Portland, Maine. A year later, she went to graduate school at the State University of New York, New Paltz, where she earned her MFA.. After her time in New York, Lowe moved back to Delaware in 2006 and opened Heidi Lowe Gallery, which exhibits contemporary art jewelry. Heidi sees jewelry as inherently connecting with the body, both physically and emotionally, and naturally expressing the wearer's identity. The pieces in this exhibition are designed to be worn, with each one representing a group of people navigating a community at various points in history.

The exhibition will be displayed at the Rehoboth Beach Museum starting October 30th through the winter season. A second Museum Members Only opening will take place on October 30th.
