"Lift Every Voice and Sing": The Legacy of James Weldon Johnson
Join historian Syl Woolford for an informative and engaging talk about James Weldon Johnson, the poet responsible for the lyrics to "Life Every Voice and Sing," widely accepted as the Black National Anthem. James Weldon Johnson was a man of many talents and he utilized all of those talents to address the inequalities in American society. He employed his investigative and leadership skills when for thirteen years he was the Executive Secretary of the NAACP. In this position he investigated numerous lynchings and worked to designate lynching as a federal crime. After he left the NAACP, he rejoined the academic world and joined Fisk University as a professor and wrote books and poetry. Celebrate Black History Month by attending this lecture and learning more about this true “Renaissance Man”.
