All Things Flight and Beautiful: Works by Allison Cosmos
February 13 through March 8, 2026
Opening Reception: Friday, February 13, 2026 (5pm-7pm)
“All Things Flight and Beautiful” explores the intersection of traditional botanical beauty and modern narrative, a series of richly layered scenes and portraits inspired by 17th-century Chinoiserie and contemporary design. Through detailed botanicals, birds, and other symbols of the natural world, the work evokes themes of history, documentation of species and imaginary worlds. Each piece is painted by hand, often incorporating native, endangered or extinct species of flora and fauna. Rich palettes speak to both heritage and innovation.
“My creative process begins with close observation of the natural world. I’m drawn to the hidden rhythms and quiet dramas unfolding among plants and animals. Each species I study becomes a character in a visual story—alive with gesture and meaning—as they interact with one another and their environments. I’m also deeply influenced by the decorative arts, and I enjoy weaving those sensibilities into each piece. A Chinoiserie influence often appears in my work, alongside echoes of Audubon, Merian, and Gould—artists whose devotion to nature and detail continues to inspire me. Endangered and extinct species are recurring themes. I often pair regional birds and creatures with complementary trees, vines, and flowers, combining scientific curiosity with aesthetic harmony.
