Masterworks for Clarinet and Strings by Bernard Herrmann and Samuel Coleridge-Taylor
On Monday, February 9, 2026 at 7:00 PM at the Archmere Academy Patio, Christopher Nichols, Associate Professor of Clarinet at the University of Delaware, and the Copeland String Quartet, comprised of Delaware Symphony Orchestra musicians, will present a program of works for clarinet and string quartet. Bernard Herrmann, American composer, is widely recognized as a composer of motion picture soundtracks, most notably seven Alfred Hitchcock thrillers including Vertigo and Psycho. The influence of the cinema is apparent in the lush, beautiful quintet Souvenirs de Voyage from 1967. In recognition of Black History Month, the program will close with British composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's Clarinet Quintet in F-sharp minor, dating from 1895. This work is deeply expressive with rich harmonies and provocative melodies. This program is generously supported by The Music Performance Trust Fund, which brings free, live, professional music programs to communities.
Christopher Nichols, Clarinet; Copeland String Quartet: Eliezer Gutman and Lisa Vaupel, violin; Elizabeth Jaffe, viola; Jennifer Jie Jin, cello
