33 Variations
33 Variations is a play by Moisés Kaufman, inspired by Ludwig van Beethoven's Diabelli Variations. It débuted on Broadway on March 9, 2009, starring Jane Fonda. Katherine, a musicologist and mother afflicted with ALS, is in denial over her prognosis. She becomes obsessed with finding the reason why Beethoven chose to create thirty-three variations on a simple piece by a minor composer. As she delves into Beethoven’s creative process, the play reaches back 200 years to Beethoven as he creates this masterwork. As Katherine pursues her quest, she faces the truth of her relationship with her daughter and her career. The music of Beethoven flows beautifully throughout the performance. This is a “must see and hear” for music lovers.
