Coffe House Concert
After a brief hiatus, Delaware Friends of Folk announce resumption of their longstanding coffee house concert series at a brand-new venue. Earle Teat Music, 3098 N Dupont Hwy, Dover, Del. will initially host three monthly shows, beginning on March 21 with New Jersey-based singer-songwriter Mike Agranoff. Doors open at 7 pm and admission is $7 for members of Delaware Friends of Folk, $10 for non-members, teens are half-price, and those 12 and under are admitted free. Fresh-brewed coffee, baked cookies, and other snacks will be available. The show starts at 7:30 and seating may be limited.
If you've been around the folk scene at all in the Northeast, you've probably seen Mike Agranoff. He's that tall guy with the red beard and leather fisherman's cap. His repertoire is vast and varied. Mike is not only a collector of songs and a master at arranging them but is also a writer of songs and recitations. He has a keen ear for the best of the best, and this only enhances his own writing. More a singer-songfinder than a singer-songwriter, Mike combs the canon of contemporary and traditional songs for little-known gems, puts his unique stamp on them, and brings them to the stage. Mike plays fingerstyle guitar in idioms ranging from traditional fiddle tunes to the American songbook to contemporary Americana. He is a master of the little-known English concertina, applying it anywhere from a haunting and poignant song accompaniment to an unexpected virtuoso transcription of a Bach concerto. A signature feature of Mike’s performances is the inclusion of some heart-stopping spoken word pieces that rivet the listener to unforgettable stories.
Not only a performer, Mike is involved in presenting folk music as well. He is one of the prime movers of The Folk Project, New Jersey's oldest and strongest folk music organization. For over four decades he was chairman of that organization's Troubadour Acoustic Concert Series (née The Minstrel Coffeehouse), one of the longest lived and most respected folk venues in the country.
Some Delaware Friends of Folk events are supported in part by a grant from the Delaware Division of the Arts, a state agency, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts. The Division promotes Delaware arts events on www.DelawareScene.com.
