Bios:
Karen’s creative journey has been intricately connected to both the natural world and the introspective exploration of human experiences. Her work is profoundly shaped by themes of identity, vulnerability, resilience, and the passage of time, which influence her perspective and photographic style. Beginning with a rural childhood and transitioning from painting to photography, her work exhibits a rich, layered quality. Karen's choice of genres includes portrait, nature, aerial, and landscape and effectively engages with these themes. Portraits capture aspects of the human condition, nature photography conveys a sense of permanence or transience, and aerial or landscape shots often provide a broader view of time’s passage. With a background in painting, Karen brings a unique approach to her photography to create powerful, thought-provoking images.
Karen was affiliated with the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP) from 2012 to 2021, attaining the distinction of Master Photographer. Throughout her career, she has garnered numerous accolades, including the title of South Australian AIPP Epson Portrait Photographer of the Year in 2012, 2014, 2016, and 2017. Additionally, she won the People Category in Capture Magazine Mono Awards 2022 and was a finalist in the Portrait Category in the Head On Photo Awards. In the Australian Photographic Prize 2023, Karen achieved won both portrait categories and received the Print Photographer of the Year award.
