Delaware Shakespeare Presents Caribbean King
Join Lewes Public Library Spoken Word Society and Delaware Shakespeare for an exciting exploration of a new play. Written by AZ Espinoza (Director of Del Shakes' Summer Fest Macbeth 2023), Caribbean King takes inspiration from Shakespeare's King Lear to create a modern twist. Cord returns to the Caribbean island of his birth as it transitions out of the Commonwealth and into political independence. Standing in his way are his father who is the island's last colonially appointed governor general, and a catastrophic hurricane barrelling towards the island. After the play reading, stick around to hear from the playwright, director and performers about this original play with found family and queer community building at the eye of its storm.
Delaware Shakespeare is the region’s premiere professional Shakespearean ensemble. Since 2003, the Wilmington-based troupe has performed a wide array of Shakespeare’s works and Shakespeare-adjacent projects across Delaware and beyond - "We envision a Delaware where people from all walks of life celebrate and explore their shared humanity through the lens of Shakespearean works.”
This program is brought to you by the library's Spoken Word Society, which celebrates the tradition and artistry of oral storytelling through lectures, performances, discussions, demonstrations, and other publicly-shared experiences. The LSWS is partially funded by the generous support of the Ron Collins and Susan Cohen as well as the Delaware Division of the Arts, a state agency, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts. The Division promotes Delaware arts events on DelawareScene.com.
Presented by Delaware Shakespeare.
