The Railroad Comes to Delaware
The Milford Museum American History Series continues with a program titled The Railroad Comes to Delaware presented by Doug Poore on Saturday, May 9, 1:00 p.m. at the Milford Public Library in Milford, Delaware. Railroads changed every facit of our lives. Railroads began just before the Civil War in the United States. Construction was halted for the war, but afterwards America grew, at times overnight, as the train came to town. Many communities moved or abandoned their previous settlements just to move to the tracks. Even the most remote parts of America were now accessible for anyone looking for adventure, to settle, or just travel and do business. Delmarva was no exception. At one time there were over 20 different railway lines crisscrossing the Delmarva Peninsula, tying together towns as small as 200 people with the major cities of New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington DC, and Norfolk. This lecture will detail the photos and stories of the railroads that once served the Delmarva Peninsula. While some rail traffic remains, most of the railroads and stations have been removed or allowed to crumble on their former locations. Some have been restored and turned into museums or business locations, and their railways converted into bike and walking paths.
