Clay Illustration: Storytelling in Low Relief
In this unique clay class, students will learn to draw with clay, using it as a surface for storytelling rather than functional pottery. Inspired by illustration, picture books, and narrative art, young artists will design and sculpt a low-relief clay scene that tells a story, captures a moment, or imagines a world. Over the course of the session, students will begin with sketches and translate their ideas into clay panels, exploring line, texture, depth, and composition. They’ll carve, layer, and refine their work, learning how shallow relief can create foreground, middle ground, and background... much like an illustration on a page. Finally, students will use glaze as a painterly tool to enhance mood, detail, and atmosphere. This class is ideal for students who love drawing, storytelling, fantasy, or world-building, and want to explore clay in a creative, narrative-focused way. Additional $10 material fee. Ages 9-13
