Singers+Songwriters Presents "Joni Mitchell: The First Ten Years"
Her songs defined a generation. Her artistry transcended the popular music of her time. And her honesty touched all who heard her. Joni Mitchell has won eleven Grammy Awards. Rolling Stone magazine called her “one of the greatest songwriters ever.” Her 1971 album Blue is considered one of the best records ever made. Her career started in 1966, and sixty years later she is still performing. Historian Paul Sparrow will explore the remarkable first ten years of her career, with acclaimed singer Tina Marie Casamento performing a selection of her most popular songs accompanied by David Libby.
The titles of her work provide a unique frame in which to look back at the late 1960s and early '70s – for example, “Both Sides Now”, “The Circle Game”, “Woodstock”, “A Case of You”, “River”, and “Help Me.” Her friends and partners included Leonard Cohen, David Crosby, Graham Nash, Neil Young, James Taylor, and Bob Dylan. She refused to be pigeonholed and constantly pushed her music into new genres, while maintaining her creative and independent spirit.
This event is co-hosted by Singers+Songwriters, a non-profit founded by Ron Collins and Paul Sparrow, in partnership with the library, and sponsored by The Inn at Canal Square.
Each individual attending in-person must register to reserve a seat. Do not list two people on one registration.
