SNAPSHOT: A Photographic History of the Rehoboth Camera CluB Curated by Manon Magnan

Founded in 1950, the Rehoboth Camera Club became affiliated with the Rehoboth Art League the following year. During an early organizational meeting, Mrs. Louise Corkran pledged to provide space for meetings and exhibitions, helping to establish photography as an important part of the Art League’s creative community. In 1952, the club was formally announced to the public, with William A. Horn serving as its first president.

As an active member of the Photographic Society of America, the Rehoboth Art League Camera Club fostered both artistic growth and community engagement. Monthly meetings brought members together to discuss photographic techniques and trends, share constructive critiques, and enjoy presentations of slides, prints, and motion pictures by fellow photographers. Beginning in 1954, the club also organized model photography sessions and made use of the Corkran Gallery as a studio space.

Beyond its educational activities, the Camera Club cultivated a vibrant social network through holiday parties, picnics, field trips with neighboring camera clubs, and participation in local events. These gatherings strengthened connections among photographers while encouraging creative exchange.

Although the original Camera Club no longer exists, its legacy continues through the Rehoboth Art League’s ongoing commitment to photography. Since 2000, the Art League has partnered with the Coastal Camera Club and provides access to a print studio where members of both organizations can create large-scale, high-quality photographic prints and learn from one another in an open studio environment. Since 2016, the Rehoboth Art League has also hosted the annual Coastal Camera Club Members’ Juried Exhibition, continuing a tradition of photographic excellence and community collaboration.

This section of the exhibition explores the history of the club and highlights some of the photographers, educators, and community members who helped shape its activities and artistic vision.
