Douglas Streakley - Burma~Land of Golden Light

Douglas Streakley - Burma~Land of Golden Light

Description: Burma, or Myanmar, is a compelling destination for adventurous travelers and for photography. The culture has been in a time warp since the military took over in 1962. Since that time there has been very little development or modernization outside of the larger cities, and traveling there is taking a step back in time. Buffalo and oxen are still used to plow the fields as they have for centuries, the antique railroads system is from the nineteenth to early twentieth centuries when it was built by the British. There is a wide diversity of indigenous ethnic groups that still wear distinctive clothing and often live in remote primitive villages. As Rudyard Kipling noted more than 100 years ago, “Burma is unlike any land you know about.” It has always been a pleasure to interact with the Burmese people who are kind, warm-hearted and gentle, formed by the pervasive and spiritual Theravada Buddhist religion that permeates their culture. Despite their poverty, the people are gracious and welcoming, with large smiles and stripes of thanka paste on their faces for protection from the sun. I was fortunate to have first visited Burma in 1967, as a young hippie world traveler going from Calcutta to Bangkok. At that time tourists were only allowed to stay for twenty-four hours. Back then Rangoon seemed more like a village than the bustling city it has become today. In the years since that first visit, I have returned four times and probably will go back again if the current military conflict settles down. The images in this presentation have been collected from several photo tours I led to many well-known and remote hill tribe regions of the country. The meeting will open at 6:00 for a half hour of conversation. The program will begin at 6:30. Members are encouraged to attend the live program to interact with the photographer. For those who cannot attend, the recording will be available in the Members Only section of the Coastal Camera website.
