Marian Coffin Gardens at Gibraltar

Preservation Delaware, Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the architectural, historic, and cultural heritage of Delaware. As the stewards of the Marian Coffin Gardens at Gibraltar, Preservation Delaware plays a vital role in protecting one of the few remaining examples of Marian Coffin’s formal garden designs—originally commissioned in 1916 by Hugh Rodney Sharp.

Through ongoing restoration, maintenance, and community engagement, Preservation Delaware ensures that the gardens remain a living testament to Coffin’s legacy as one of America’s first female landscape architects. The organization supports conservation of historic structures and landscapes throughout the state, but its work at Gibraltar exemplifies its commitment to preserving not just buildings, but the artistry of designed outdoor spaces and their power to educate, inspire, and connect communities.
