White Nights
Before there was Mastroianni the icon, there was Mastroianni the dreamer.
Luchino Visconti — the master behind The Leopard and Death in Venice — took a Dostoevsky short story and turned it into one of the most achingly romantic films of the 1950s. Shot entirely on hauntingly artificial, fog-soaked soundstages, White Nights follows a lonely young man who falls for a mysterious woman he meets on a bridge, across four unforgettable nights that blur the line between love and delusion.
It's gorgeous. It's melancholic. It's Mastroianni at his most vulnerable, opposite a luminous Maria Schell — and it's the kind of film that doesn't get a big-screen showing very often.
This is a rare chance to see it the way it was meant to be seen: on a real screen, in a real theater, with other people who love cinema as much as you do.
