Francis DiFronzo: The Cure
Somerville Manning Gallery is pleased to present The Cure, Francis DiFronzo’s 20th Anniversary Exhibition. Long celebrated for his luminous, meticulously crafted landscapes that balance realism with mystery, DiFronzo turns inward in this deeply personal body of work, using the American landscape as a stage to explore the many ways he has searched for healing throughout his life.
For DiFronzo, a "cure" is rarely simple. It may arrive as a place, a decision, or a relationship - offering solace, transformation, or, at times, revealing itself to be only temporary. Familiar motifs from the artist's imagined landscapes - railcars, empty barns, telephone poles, vast skies, and traces of human presence - become emblems of memory, resilience, departure, and return.
A native of Southern California, DiFronzo made the life-changing decision to leave the west coast and move to Philadelphia to study at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where he earned his MFA. That move became one of the defining "cures" of his life, opening the door to a community, career, and artistic voice that continue to shape his work today. In The Cure, he acknowledges that pivotal journey while paying quiet homage to Philadelphia, the city that temporarily became home and offered the possibility of reinvention.
Rendered through DiFronzo's distinctive process of layering oil over watercolor, gouache, and acrylic, the paintings possess remarkable atmospheric depth and an almost cinematic stillness. With The Cure, DiFronzo continues his exploration of the American landscape as a vessel for storytelling, offering his most intimate exhibition to date: a meditation on the places we go, both literal and emotional, in search of becoming whole.
On view from October 16 – November 14. Hours: Tuesday – Saturday, 10:00 – 5:00.
