Thoughts on the 1776 Delaware Declaration of Rights: Justice Gary Traynor and Ron Collins
Lewes Public Library’s Distinguished Lecturer Ron Collins will join Delaware Supreme Court Justice Gary Traynor in conversation to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Delaware’s Declaration of Rights. The key provisions in Delaware’s Declaration included clauses on popular sovereignty, religious freedom, due process, criminal justice, restrictions on military power, and press freedom – more than a decade before the federal Bill of Rights. Unlike Virginia’s 1776 Declaration, Delaware's explicitly limited fundamental rights to “freemen” and tied civil privileges to Christian belief. Collins and Justice Traynor will reflect on the historical and legal significance of this early document and its lasting influence on Delaware’s laws and civic ideals.
This program is part of Lewes 250, a commemoration of America’s 250th anniversary, honoring our town’s rich past and bright future. Lewes 250 brings neighbors, visitors, and local organizations together in celebration of the “First Town in the First State.”
