COOL JAZZ FROM A COOL COUNTRY: OSKAR STENMARK TRIO

COOL JAZZ FROM A COOL COUNTRY: OSKAR STENMARK RETURNS TO WILMINGTON OCTOBER 4th WITH A TRIBUTE TO HIS SWEDISH HERITAGE

The Arts at Trinity will present the Oskar Stenmark Trio in concert on Sunday, Oct. 4, at 3 p.m., in Wilmington’s Old Swedes Church and Historic Site, founded by Swedish immigrants in 1699. The concert is free to the community as a gift of Trinity Episcopal Parish, conservator of Old Swedes, located at 606 North Church Street, a constituent of First State National Historic Park.

Joined by Ana Petrova on piano and Nick Bedway on upright bass, innovative hornplayer Oskar Stenmark will perform “In My Grandmother’s Footsteps,” original jazz drawing upon Swedish folk music, modern jazz and improvisation. Oskar, a native of Gothenburg, Sweden, represents the 10th generation of a musical family. In 1956 his grandmother, Elsie Borjes, toured the United States -- including Delaware -- with a group of folk fiddlers from Rattvik, Dalecarlia.

“The Arts at Trinity first presented Oskar three years ago and he gave us a brilliant concert,” said David Simmons, music director at Trinity Parish. “We’ve wanted ever since to bring him back to play at Old Swedes, because of his Swedish heritage as well as his sensational Nordic sound. We’re thrilled we could finally make this happen.”

Based in New York City, Oskar plays at jazz clubs all around town. His horn has been heard at the Super Bowl, in “The Matrix Resurrections” and at New York Fashion Week. He has performed with stars such as David Byrne, Living Colour and multiple Grammy winner the Maria Schneider Orchestra.

The Old Swedes event will include light refreshments served outside before and after the concert. Admission is free. Donations will be gratefully accepted. All donations will benefit future free The Arts at Trinity events.
